Trump’s statement after fatal FSU shooting sparks outrage

On April 17, 2025, a shooter opened fire at Florida State University, killing two and injuring six others. The alleged shooter, Phoenix Ikner, is the son of a police officer and reportedly used his mother’s former service weapon.

During a press conference, President Trump addressed the tragedy, stating, “These things are terrible,” and reiterated his support for the Second Amendment, saying, “The gun doesn’t do the shooting, the people do.” He emphasized his obligation to protect the Second Amendment and mentioned that he was familiar with the area and school.

Trump’s response sparked backlash on social media. Critics accused him of deflecting the issue and ignoring the need for gun control, while some questioned his focus on the Second Amendment instead of offering meaningful solutions.

The suspected shooter is recovering in the hospital from non-life-threatening injuries, and the motive remains unclear. The names of the victims have not been released.
