Couple with Down syndrome decide to have children, face criticism
Over 20 years ago, Patti White’s daughter, Lisa, who has Down syndrome, announced she was pregnant. Lisa had been living independently, working full-time, and in a healthy relationship with a man who also has Down syndrome. Despite common beliefs that men with Down syndrome are sterile, Lisa’s pregnancy surprised her family.

Though her decision was criticized, especially for being irresponsible, her family supported her. Lisa had a typical pregnancy, with morning sickness and attending childbirth classes. Her son, Nic, was born prematurely and also has Down syndrome. Unfortunately, Nic’s father passed away when Nic was five, and Lisa raised him with the help of her mother, Patti.

Now 24, Nic thrives and respects the women who raised him. He describes his mother as his greatest source of love and support. In 2016, Patti shared their journey on Facebook, celebrating how Lisa and Nic overcame the odds. Patti, Lisa, and Nic’s story highlights the value of individuals with Down syndrome and serves as inspiration for others.
